On the off chance someone is, I am going to be making more of an effort to post more. I tend to keep in contact with most people in my life via facebook, so I think I'll be changing the emphasis of this blog a bit.

Much of my time lately has been taken up with roller derby. I have been skating just over a year and I love it. I also hate it. Derby is such a rewarding hobby and the feeling you get when you have a personal break through at a scrimmage or practice is so encouraging. On the other hand, it practically rules your free time. I suppose, for now this is a good activity to keep my body and mind busy.
This season I had been drafted to the Gold Diggers, one of the Fairbanks Rollergirls house teams. Oddly enough, the other team is the Raven Rebels. While I am a raven enthusiast, and now this blog is even more aptly named, I am very happy to be a Gold Digger. My derby name is Mrs. Growley, partly in homage to my life-long love of wolves and party because it is fun to sing my name to the tune of 'Mr. Crowley' by Ozzie Osborne.

This weekend we have a game in Palmer, AK against the Denali Destroyer Dolls. For a lot of us this will be our first real game play a team that doesn't exist within our own league. I'm excited and a bit nervous. Expect to hear more about that when I return!

So, for the future expect to see more things here derby related. I am taking a writing class this semester, so perhaps I'll share some of my work here as well. For now, take care and stay warm!Melissahttp://www.blogger.com/profile/00201141028270962944noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-8538522568874323663.post-81186812749606714912012-01-02T17:15:00.003-09:002012-01-02T17:27:04.344-09:00The hiatus continuesYes, I know I've been MIA for forever. The reasoning is, well my laptop has been broken for over a year. And, in September, Matthew got a job with KUAC in Fairbanks and moved, taking the computer with him. I am stuck in Anchorage, computerless until I can find work in Fairbanks. Writing out long posts on an iphone is not preferable.

Of course Matthew and I decided to do what any sane person would do when living apart again, for an undefined amount of time...we got married. :)On November 26th, we tied the knot after being together for over nine years. We had a small ceremony in Fairbanks and we are planning on having a celebration in May on the Oregon coast for all our other friends and family 'down south'.

Until I have the motivation and technology to do more in depth blogging, here is a wedding photo. Matthew and I went with an 'old west'/Victorian theme. This picture was taken in the Harding Car, the boxcar President Harding rode in to travel to Fairbanks for the golden spike ceremony, commemorating the newly built railroad from Fairbanks to Seward.

<img style="display:block; margin:0px auto 10px; text-align:center;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;width: 245px; height: 320px;" src="http://3.bp.blogspot.com/-9pqJ7lV6lck/TwJmxvOAX1I/AAAAAAAABps/6i7UVclB-2E/s320/Wedding_Photo1.jpg" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5693225883624562514" />Melissahttp://www.blogger.com/profile/00201141028270962944noreply@blogger.com1tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-8538522568874323663.post-78280274678935411722011-05-18T21:04:00.001-08:002011-05-18T21:04:31.975-08:00Birthday Chomp!I've been anti-people lately, so I didn't plan anything for my birthday. I think this is the first birthday I am actually glad to not be really celebrating. Instead I told Matthew I wanted to cook a special meal with our CSA box we get tomorrow and then go see a movie.

So on the birthday menu tomorrow is:

Appetizer: Fried Brie with apple slices

Main Coarse:

Salad greens with feta and tomato
Filet Mignon with Cabernet Sauvignon mushroom sauce
Sauteed zucchini

Dessert:
Its a mystery! Matthew is picking something up and won't tell me what it is.

I even bought fancy plates for this meal so I can take pictures of pretty food. :D Pictures will follow tomorrow!

Oh and I think we are going to go see Thor. I'll let you know how that goes.Melissahttp://www.blogger.com/profile/00201141028270962944noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-8538522568874323663.post-61040816760938487652011-05-17T21:41:00.003-08:002011-05-17T21:53:20.271-08:00Fleet Foxes frolic freely! In case you didn't already know, Fleet Foxes has a new album out that is worth checking out. It is called 'Helplessness Blues'. I find myself relating to this album a lot and it is comforting knowing that I'm not the only one feeling completely lost in life. Never expect something from me in a timely matter because I procrastinate. That being said, Solstihanukwanzamas-eid cards/gifts will be distributed at random intervals throughout the year. Why limit this wonderful occasion to only one time of year?

And with that I leave you with an updated picture of yours truly from a night of debauchery in Anchorage.

<img style="display:block; margin:0px auto 10px; text-align:center;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;width: 239px; height: 320px;" src="http://1.bp.blogspot.com/_ulWQJa08fCA/TU4PL9-FaAI/AAAAAAAABoE/GKUB4q68XUE/s320/photo.JPG" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5570406487391823874" />Melissahttp://www.blogger.com/profile/00201141028270962944noreply@blogger.com1tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-8538522568874323663.post-60762967625161189182010-12-11T10:51:00.003-09:002010-12-11T10:53:15.386-09:00Closed for businessI have closed requests for Solstihanukwanzamas-eid cards. I'll be sending out more holiday cards that are manufactured, but only a select few will get the hand-made Solstihanukwanzamas-eid cards. I must warn you, they look pretty juvenile, but they have been fun to work on. I hope to have at least half of them done this weekend. Keep an eye on your mailboxes folks! :DMelissahttp://www.blogger.com/profile/00201141028270962944noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-8538522568874323663.post-64961343966256581992010-12-06T17:23:00.003-09:002010-12-06T18:43:51.132-09:00Last call for Solstihanukwanzamas-eidWhile decorating my heathen tree last Sunday, I got to thinking about the festive time that is Solstihanukwanzamas-eid. There are variations on the spelling and pronunciation, but really the spirit is all the same; enjoy the winter holiday and the company of good friends. Sadly, I don't know if Solstihanukwanzamas-eid will catch on. Even so, it is still in its infancy and I am making steps to beef it up a little bit.

Since we started erecting our heathen tree several years ago, Matthew and I decorated it with ornaments of Batman. Now, what better a festive figure than Batman? He rewards the nice and punishes the naughty, right? But why stop there? Why not include many festive figures into our holiday? Of course, the message is still the same. If you're nice, you get something good! If you're bad, however, bad things happen to you.

Here is our list so far: If you're good, Batman gives you a grappling hook delivered in his festive batmobile. If you're bad, Batman gives you rabies. :( If you're good, Willy Wonka gives you ever-lasting gobstobers! If you're bad, Jesus takes away your cellphone. :( If you're good a unicorn gives you magical chocolate rainbows! If you're bad, Zool jumps out of your refrigerator and gnaws off your face. :( If you're good zombies eat your brains! If you're bad, zombies eat your brains? :( Sorry, zombies can't tell the difference between good and bad. Tough luck kids!

I'm still thinking about the traditional Solstihanukwanzamas-eid feast. More on that later. Until then, what would you add to Solstihanukwanzamas-eid?

Oh and this is your last call for a Solstihanukwanzamas-eid card! Email or message me your address and I get one in the mail to you.

Happy Solstihanukwanzamas-eid everyone!Melissahttp://www.blogger.com/profile/00201141028270962944noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-8538522568874323663.post-88986201106671177182010-12-01T20:12:00.004-09:002010-12-01T20:30:46.081-09:00Sasquatch handsI am very positive people think I am crazy. I am ok with that though. Today it was 3 degrees (Fahrenheit) and I trudged the 24 minute walk to work in a skirt. But I was not cold thanks to my rabbit hat and my Sasquatch hands. Since my beaver mittens are so fuzzy and huge, I feel like I have sasquatch hands while wearing them. I made the decree that they shall hence forth be referred to as sasquatch hands. This makes me happy!

Yes, I know I look all sorts of ridiculous wearing sasquatch hands. It doesn't help that I pare them with bog boots. But you know what, I am warm! Hot even! One of these days I'll have to get a picture of me in my get-up. For now, enjoy an almost year-old picture of my sasquatch hands.

<img style="display:block; margin:0px auto 10px; text-align:center;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;width: 320px; height: 214px;" src="http://1.bp.blogspot.com/_ulWQJa08fCA/TPcub4oUOhI/AAAAAAAABnQ/134RQX_-k94/s320/IMG_5448.JPG" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5545952522722884114" />

<img style="display:block; margin:0px auto 10px; text-align:center;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;width: 320px; height: 214px;" src="http://3.bp.blogspot.com/_ulWQJa08fCA/TPcuxDDpFCI/AAAAAAAABnY/vktODPQ9Hcg/s320/IMG_5449.JPG" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5545952886299104290" />Melissahttp://www.blogger.com/profile/00201141028270962944noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-8538522568874323663.post-88603557008096808932010-11-23T21:17:00.001-09:002010-11-23T21:17:46.047-09:00Pomegranate madnessI picked up a pomegranate a couple days ago. I don't get them often, but they were on sale and I couldn't resist. The one thing about pomegranates is that it takes forever to get all the little seeds out. I didn't realize I had been peeling them wrong until I found a little instruction pamphlet at the store last night, sitting in front of the pomegranate display. I'm always eager to learn about fruit, so I snagged one.

True, the directions were much easier, and afforded less in the way of smashed seeds than the cut-in-half-and-dig-around method I had been using previously. The better way to get the yummy goodness out of a pomegranate is to score the skin at each membrane divide. Then you peel back the skin of one section and pluck out all the little seeds into a bowl of water. Continue to do this with each section until you're done. Any membrane parts that have fallen into the water bowl magically float and you can skim off the top. Then drain and enjoy!

It was really easy, and I had more in the way of whole seeds that I had in the past. However, by the time I was through, my kitchen resembled a scene out of Dexter. Pomegranate juice splattered across the counter, my white blouse, the paper towel roll, the backsplash and up onto the wall. I didn't even realize this delicious fruit was spewing all over the place until I was done.

After playing crime scene clean-up with my kitchen, I began to wonder if all the handling time is worth it. I don't know. Maybe I should just stick to popcorn?Melissahttp://www.blogger.com/profile/00201141028270962944noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-8538522568874323663.post-27905237974893667202010-11-21T20:51:00.001-09:002010-11-21T20:53:24.723-09:00Its beginning to feel a lot like Solstihanukwanzamas-eid!Its that time of year again: Solstihanukwanzamas-eid! The holiday has been edited to reflect the Islamic Eid holidays. I don't discriminate winter holidays! So, if you want a Solstihanukwanzamas-eid card, message me your address. I hope to be able to fulfill all the requests in December, but it may end up arriving into the new year.Melissahttp://www.blogger.com/profile/00201141028270962944noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-8538522568874323663.post-48428294698273173162010-11-04T22:20:00.004-08:002010-11-04T22:29:47.550-08:00First FridayI will be helping out at IGCA for First Friday. Stop by and say hi and don't forget to buy your tickets for the Factory Party on the 13th. In addition to purchasing tickets at the First Friday event, you can purchase them online here. The party should be all sorts of Warhol fun!

In relation to the factory party, I am stumped as to what to wear. Anyone have suggestions?

While you're mulling that over, here was my halloween costume. I was a Mog, half man, half dog. I'm my own best friend. I guess in my case I was a Womog. And if you're wondering about the shirt, its this great little space dog with a rocket pack, drooling in his space helmet. I picked it up at the San Diego Comic-con this year from Loter. They have some great stuff, you really should check them out.

<img style="display:block; margin:0px auto 10px; text-align:center;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;width: 169px; height: 320px;" src="http://2.bp.blogspot.com/_ulWQJa08fCA/TNOjfJ7ExJI/AAAAAAAABm4/NLGFNnHsuSI/s320/halloween.jpg" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5535948122603439250" />Melissahttp://www.blogger.com/profile/00201141028270962944noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-8538522568874323663.post-2122046869114451532010-10-07T18:36:00.004-08:002010-10-07T18:55:46.466-08:00Pets Vs. ChildrenI posted this article on my facebook yesterday and made the statement that if they (meaning policy-makers and those with the ability to help) could sit by and watch puppies burn, would they do the same thing for children? Apparently I touched a nerve with those who have firefighter friends and family. The fact that I equated children with dogs did not sit well. I had no intention of discrediting the work firemen do, I am very grateful for them. Still, I just can't imagine sitting back and watching a home burn because of being scared of losing my job. Not only that, but watching a home burn with living beings inside.

How can we be so arrogant to devalue the life of someone's pet? Now, if it had been someone's baby inside, do you think those firemen would have violated their policy? Probably. But a dog, well we can let that burn alive because a dog has no social value.

I view my pets as my children. It kills me to think that in a situation like this, someone would let my child burn to death because of a $75 fee. I know this is on the verge of PETA views, "animals are people too," but no this is not the case. People are animals.Melissahttp://www.blogger.com/profile/00201141028270962944noreply@blogger.com2tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-8538522568874323663.post-57428988482098538162010-10-05T21:19:00.003-08:002010-10-05T21:36:25.349-08:00Blog statsOut of pure curiosity, I checked my blog stats today. I didn't expect much in the way of traffic, not with a personal blog like this. However, I did notice some interesting things.

Most of my traffic coming from linked sites was expected, spawning from places like meetup.com, facebook, livejournal, etc. Several come from google, twitter, and some site I have no clue what it is, and it doesn't open anything up when I try to access it.

Most of my audience uses Microsoft. Thats ok, I don't like Macs either. 73% use Internet Explorer. Seriously people, switch to Chrome. Drink that Google cool-aid. It tastes yummy! Expectedly, my audience is mostly from the US, however, Hungary and Taiwan come in second at 12 hits each.

There are two keyword searches listed and honestly I am baffled. Here they are:
"now hnue motane" and "kefir grains el paso".

I can understand the kefir grains...maybe I've mentioned El Paso before? The other one I am at a loss. Other than my friend Hnue being a celeb star personality in her own right, I don't understand the combination of the search. Or, Yes I am still alive.I figure I needed to update this eventually. What have I been up to? Well, I managed to get a second job. I was working seven days a week for a couple months. I quit the second job not too long ago because it would be too far for me to get to in the winter without a vehicle. So the search is on for a second job closer to town.

Matthew and I went to the comic-con in July. It was amazing! I'll post pictures of that in the near future.

I have been battling with the PA department of revenue since May to get copies of my tax return so the PFD office believes that I actually filed as a non-resident of PA while I worked there last summer. Finally I got the needed documentation last Friday. Hopefully things aren't being cut too close for me to get my PFD money on time.

It is looking like Matthew will be staying in Dillingham for most likely an additional four to six months. It sucks, but financially it will be a good move for us. I was bored and missing Matthew today so I decided to go walk downtown and sit in the starbucks for a while. Our first date was at a starbucks in Gresham and the smell automatically makes me think of him. Its comforting. The only trouble is, this time the starbucks didn't smell right. Something was off. I was highly disappointed.

On another related note, the weather here has been sorta damp (but not down-pouring) and sorta fall-like. The smell of moist earth and decaying leaves makes me miss Oregon. Fairbanks didn't have this smell in the fall-time. Its too dry there. Anchorage, on the other hand is more along the lines of Oregon. I am missing the northwest very much tonight.

Its been four months since I moved to Anchorage. It has gone by quick, but I am anxious for the next chapter in my life. I know things are going to change big time relatively quickly. I just need to be patient for those changes to happen.Melissahttp://www.blogger.com/profile/00201141028270962944noreply@blogger.com1tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-8538522568874323663.post-53568765670715808132010-06-08T20:55:00.001-08:002010-06-08T20:55:53.350-08:00ANC Week 5My search for a part-time weekend job continues. I didn't realize it would be so difficult. I applied to a couple other places, and had an 'interview?' at a tattoo shop for counter help. It took all of one minute talking to the dude while he was tattooing this girl's foot. He said to leave my resume on the counter and that I didn't seem like a duche. Thanks? I also contacted a local art studio for life drawing modeling. I feel so tubby right now, its a little nerve wracking doing modeling again, but modeling for drawing is so different than modeling for the camera. So, I don't think it will be too bad a self esteem punch.

Thursday I had my kickball umping clinic. One hour of standing out in the cold and wind...boo. But hopefully I'll be able to earn a bit of money from it all. Still haven't gotten my schedule for the season. It starts next week!

I went and saw Kick Ass last weekend at the Bearstooth. Great movie!! Only one reference was made to date the movie, but it was about LOST so I can forgive. It made me laugh.

I've been hooked on watching Kyle XY on Hulu this past week. Totally juvenile and really its not that great of acting...or original on the storyline. But I just can't seem to help myself...Lame, I know!

My co-worker accepted another job this past week. I plan on applying for his job once its opened up. Keep your fingers crossed for me! It would be a couple bucks pay raise, go team!Melissahttp://www.blogger.com/profile/00201141028270962944noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-8538522568874323663.post-68483189406260154372010-05-31T21:42:00.001-08:002010-05-31T21:42:58.155-08:00ANC Week 4: One Month DownMatthew left last Monday and it already feels like its been a year. ::whine whine mope mope:: My new schedule at work started this pay period. What that means is I get to work a short day every other Thursday followed by a Friday off. It just happened that my first day off coincided with the holiday weekend. I got four days off and now I am ready to get back to work. I was struggling to find things to keep myself busy and not spend money.

I did several bike rides, and spent my fred meyer's gift card I got from my parents for my birthday. Used it on some food, a new pillow, pillow case, and a new dress. I still have a few bucks left on the card.

The weather here has been fabulous, mostly in the 70s for the past four days. Sadly, most of the shops downtown don't have air conditioning. I found this out by going to a job interview for a extra part-time job at this Alaska gift shop. The shop was terrible. The interview was terrible. I believe it was the first time I had someone start falling asleep during an interview. I swear, I'm not that boring! Oh, and I basically got berated for saying I would like $10 an hour. Apparently a college education makes you stuck-up and want more money? Whatever. Aside from the people managing the place being strange, and the shop full of crappy plastic souvenirs, the place was sweltering! And its not even the dead of summer yet. If by some chance they call me to offer me a job, I will turn it down. Not a good vibe.

I am glad I had the interview though, or else I wouldn't have found out about another place hiring. I stopped in this local art gallery to look around before my interview and I found out they are hiring also. The place is really cute, not nearly as hot, and the artwork they sell is really beautiful stuff. I grabbed an application and emailed my resume later that night. I was asked to come down to their booth at the weekend market to talk to the owner. She was really nice. It wasn't a formal interview, but I have a good feeling about it. Hopefully she'll want to hire me.

After the pseudo interview, I decided to look around the market. I saw someone selling wood flutes, which surprised me. I had searched for Alaskan flute makers before, and they're were none. I stopped and tried out the flutes and talked to the guy. Apparently he just started making them a year ago. Come to find out, there is a flute circle in Anchorage. I intend on following up on that soon. It was really weird how one thing led to another.

Yesterday I went to a BBQ at my roommates mom's place. It was fun, we played kanasta (sp?). Her mom's husband though is pretty conservative, and has half of Africa's wildlife hanging on the walls, draped over chairs, and lying on the floor. You all know how much I love dead animals, but show some restraint man! I don't think a home should rival the collections of any major museum. Three mounts tops should be a rule. We played kanasta with cards sporting the pictures of "America's 52 most dangerous liberals" on the backs. LOL

Today I rode my bike down a part of the Chester Creek trail I hadn't explored yet. I packed a lunch and ate it at one of the parks a long the way. Then I decided to ride back and see if the comic shop was open. It wasn't. But I saw a sale at REI and I really need to get a bike mirror. I stopped in, but all the mirrors they have won't fit my bike. Thats what I get for having a bike that is nearly as old as I am. I snagged a padded seat cover instead. With all this bike riding, my lady business is getting seriously bruised. Ouch!

Now its back to work tomorrow. I have a four day work week, followed by another four day work week. Who needs to take time off with this sort of schedule?!Melissahttp://www.blogger.com/profile/00201141028270962944noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-8538522568874323663.post-34598044629785745402010-05-24T21:04:00.002-08:002010-05-24T21:57:48.938-08:00ANC Week 3: ReconnectingThis week was filled with way too much eating. Matthew flew into Anchorage to spend my birthday with me. We went to Glacier Brew house the first night, he got this great pasta dish and I got a mediterranean pizza. Wednesday was my birthday and we initially were going to go to Humpy's, but after we went in and ordered a beer we decided to go someplace else. The menu was not what I expected at all. So, we went to Ginger instead. It was this great Asian infusion restaurant. We had a sushi type appetizer, Matthew had a curry dish and I had this mac & cheese with scallops dish. Delicious! We then went to a designer cake studio and bought birthday cake for me. Also delicious!

The rest of the week we also went to the Bears tooth for dinner and a movie (saw Alice in Wonderland), went to Snow City, IHOP, I'm sure someplace else...I can't remember. We met up with some friends who were in from Dillingham and went to a comedy improv show and drinks. Sunday was full of shopping for food stuffs for Matthew. We also saw Iron Man 2 during the weekend. I think it was just about as good as the first.

Sunday we went to a Lost party hosted by a friend of a friend. It was really nice to be able to watch the series finale with Matthew. We've enjoyed Lost together for years, and its one of those weird couple things we enjoy that just feels strange if we don't watch it together. I'm still not sure about the series outcome.

The week went by way too quickly. Matthew left this morning and I felt depressed and in the verge of tears most the day. :( We have a trip planned for July...I hope that gets here quick.Melissahttp://www.blogger.com/profile/00201141028270962944noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-8538522568874323663.post-78116626491915814142010-05-16T21:27:00.002-08:002010-05-16T21:48:56.155-08:00ANC Week 2: Exploring MidtownTo start off with a total tangent, whenever I think of midtown, I can't help but think of the Dark Tower. This makes me suspicious of midtown.

The job is still going great. We got two new job corps interns to prep documents for scanning. Basically this means they have to take all the staples out and repair any pages that are too chewed up to go through the scanner. Its been nice!

I focused most of my energy this week in finding a dresser and finding a second job (part-time). I have succeeded in both and both I found on craigslist. I have to say, craigslist has been a very good friend to me lately.

I answered an ad for a kickball umpire job. The Anchorage municipality parks has an adult kickball league that plays games from mid June to mid August. Apparently there were 18 teams last year, and they expect to reach their capacity of 24 this year. So I filled out my application and went for an 'interview' on Thursday. I rode my bike through midtown (after getting turned around a couple times) to the recreation center off of 48th. The interview was very informal and I got the feeling they were taking anyone that seemed reliable and wasn't too crazy. So, there you have it. On June 3rd I have my first umpire meeting and then games start on the 14th. Weee! I am still looking for another part-time job, so stay tuned for updates on that.

Yesterday, I acquired an old dresser and two rubbermaid stackable blocks of drawers for a total of $25. Yay for no more clothes on the floor! I plan on repainting the dresser soon though. It is uuuugly! The guy said he would deliver it, which was great, but he showed up two hours late from the time we had originally agreed upon. Because of that, I missed learning how to play hero clix at the comic shop. I still went to the comic shop, but merely perused the vertigo titles and snagged the second DMZ book. I highly recommend this title.

Today I biked over to the Lake Otis area to look at a down comforter this lady advertised on craigslist. It was a good price and clean, hardly used. I only had my small backpack with me and it took about 10 minutes of both of us trying to press all the air out and shove it in the pack. It never zipped up all the way, but we tied some cord around it so I was able to bike home without it falling out. On the way there I noticed an IHOP and I realized I so very much want to go to IHOP. I didn't. Matthew is coming into town next week, so maybe we can go when he is here. :D

I found a store downtown today that was practically made for me. Its a chocolate lounge. I couldn't resist going in and ordering a hot chocolate. It was made with their own recipe of 'drinking chocolate' which is this dark chocolate sludge that you can drink straight or mix with milk. I got the spicy kind that is blended with three different peppers. Divine!

Now on to week three of the Anchorage chapter. Matthew gets here on Tuesday and he'll be spending my birthday with me plus the several days following. I'm very excited!Melissahttp://www.blogger.com/profile/00201141028270962944noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-8538522568874323663.post-7391989595274457662010-05-08T18:00:00.002-08:002010-05-08T18:58:59.364-08:00ANC Week 1: Getting acquaintedI have survived my first week in the big city. The job is great. Not really special or exceptionally challenging, but it is exactly what I expected. Its nice when your expectations are met.

My boss is this big guy who strikes me as either being ex military or a fishing boat captain. Intimidating, but he is super nice. My co-worker in the scanning center is also really great. We have bonded on a nerdly level. Day one and pirate verbiage was already being flung around the office. :D Its kind of fun working downtown and I know working for the state is going to be very nice. I am going to start a schedule next pay period where I work a long week and then get a three day weekend the following week. Essentially I get two three day weekends a month. Not to mention state holidays. I think I could get used to this!

The only thing is that the funding is only for a year. Hopefully by this time next year, Matthew and I will be either doing grad school, or I can find something more perm with the state.

After the work week was over, I went to first friday yesterday. I saw a bunch of great glass work. It got me really thinking about design and what type of things I'd like to try if I can get more equipment. After that I was just planning on shutting myself in my room and eat ice cream, but my roommates invited me out with them. I'm always quite in large groups of people I don't know, but it was nice to get out and be somewhat social. We went to one place that I can't remember the name, but they had hookahs. I tried it and was amazed at how smooth it was. There was some sort of mint tobacco in it.

Then we went to a gay bar called Mad Myrna's. That was fun, but I didn't really feel like dancing and its very much a dance floor type bar. Had a nice buzz though. :)

Today I had to go grocery shopping. I was hoping to get some local produce at the weekend market downtown, but all they had there was alaskana crafts and one stand with fruit. I bought some pretty apples, couple oranges and one mango. There are my lunches for the next week! Then I hoofed it to New Sagaya to buy the rest of my groceries. I got this week's groceries for just over $20. I think that is pretty good, especially when its mostly produce. If I went down to safeway I'm sure I could get it cheaper, but its quite a ways away.

I wanted to check out the comic shop, so I dropped off my groceries and then hoofed it over to Bosco's. Its always weird going into a new comic shop, I never know where anything is. I chatted with one of the girls that works there, she is into Vertigo titles and the Decemberists (I happened to be wearing one of my decemberists shirts today) too! We exchanged info. ^_^ I'm desperate to make friends! lol

I also chatted with another guy there about learning some of the games they run there on the weekends. Looks like I'll be going back next Saturday to learn how to play Heroclix. Should be fun!

After the comic shop, I continued my trek down to Title Wave Books. They apparently are looking for summer book shelvers, so I am going to put in an application with them. The income from a second job will be very nice indeed.

Now I need to start thinking about getting my java class completed. I just don't want to do it!!Melissahttp://www.blogger.com/profile/00201141028270962944noreply@blogger.com2tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-8538522568874323663.post-87288084981373252282010-04-24T19:39:00.002-08:002010-04-24T19:46:45.399-08:0010 Goals for AnchorageSo I'm getting excited about my move to Anchorage and there are many things I want to do once there. To start, here are 10 goals for this coming summer.

1. Learn to skate well! I need to buy some outdoor quad skates so I can beef up my skills before roller derby recruiting in August.

2. Bike the coastal trial. I think this is a must!

3. Lose 25 lbs. I NEED to do this. I gained 15 lbs since moving to Dillingham. This is not acceptable!

4. See more art. Do more art! I'm getting a good start on glass works and I hope to continue this.

5. Live frugally. I will need to save money, but I think this will be a good exercise in cutting costs.

6. Grow some plants! I'm not good at this, Matthew is the one with the green thumb. But I would like to grow some veggies this summer if I have the space.

7. Learn to dance! I think this might be doable, since my new roomies are two dance instructors. I'm hoping they'll have a good beat on some places to go to learn to dance.

8. Hang out with more friends. I think this will be doable for sure. I already have several friends planning to come visit me. I've missed everyone so much.

9. Read more classics. I realize I need to continue to broaden my reading list.

10. Write more letters. I started writing a lot of letters when I moved to the Dill, but I stopped. I need to start this up again.Melissahttp://www.blogger.com/profile/00201141028270962944noreply@blogger.com1tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-8538522568874323663.post-91705640882945223132010-04-24T15:33:00.005-08:002010-04-24T18:44:59.575-08:00Attach of the InternetsAs I watch 'Attack of the Show' on the G4 network, while nerding out on my laptop, I realize I am way too plugged into the technology of our age. I find myself frustrated when attempting to talk to others who are completely clueless when it comes to computers and internet pop-culture. At times I feel like a complete goon because of this.

Am I just a follower who drank the google kool-aid? Perhaps. Should I care? Maybe. But these youtube videos of cute kittens are just too tempting. I could never give up the internetz!

EDIT: This is why one should not make blog posts and watch TV at the same time. Typos abound! Sorry peoples...but you don't read my blog for correct grammar and high level editing, now do you?Melissahttp://www.blogger.com/profile/00201141028270962944noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-8538522568874323663.post-63747800966159475112010-04-18T13:33:00.005-08:002010-04-18T13:42:02.384-08:00New art stuffsThese are a couple of the pieces I made from my glass fusing class last weekend. Its one of those 'extreme' cake shows on the food network. Its not really all that exciting but I must say, I get incredibly anxious when it comes to the part of the show where the contestants must move their cakes.

Typically it takes three to four people to move these massive, towering cakes. I find myself holding my breath until they get the cake safely on the judging table. Such a silly thing to be on the edge of your seat about! Unlike Nascar, with this show, I am not hoping for an epic wreck.Melissahttp://www.blogger.com/profile/00201141028270962944noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-8538522568874323663.post-89553195924891066632010-04-08T14:25:00.003-08:002010-04-08T14:34:10.892-08:00Dead things = Art!Yes, dead things CAN be art! Yet, always controversial. This art show at UAF is exactly the kind of art I love. Yes its creepy. Yes its not something most people would hang on their walls. It does however, evoke emotion and that is exactly what art is for.

I like this approach of making casts of carcases. Its different and more versatile than plain taxidermy. Of course people are going to make a stink about it. Oh well. Not everyone can understand I suppose.Melissahttp://www.blogger.com/profile/00201141028270962944noreply@blogger.com1
